-Ing = Charles Rice Goff III (electronic guitar, pedal effects, various plectra, voice) Steve Schaer (ARP Odyssey synthesizer, electronic guitar)
Recorded May 26, 1984, "Beyond The Aquarium" showcases how Goff and Schaer used their rehearsals to develop new ideas during what became the final year of them working together in the project known as "-Ing." This uninterrupted 25-minute recording features the following set:
Red Finger Aspect The Aquarium Beyond The Aquarium (improvisation) Suck On My Nose
Throughout 1983, -Ing opened some gaps in the public's ears with several live performances and a few broadcasts on non-commercial radio stations. Goff and Schaer felt they needed to expand their repertoire before taking to the stage again in 1984. Consequently, they spent much of that year refining new material. Sadly, they performed only once in 1984, and that show turned out to be their last public appearance.
Goff wrote "Red Finger Aspect" between 1982-1983. -Ing never publicly performed the composition, and this is the only existing recording of Goff and Schaer rehearsing it. A variant of the piece was first presented to the public in 1987 by the duo known as "Disism," the collaborative project featuring Goff and Killr "Mark" Kaswan.
"The Aquarium" is literally the first piece that was ever attributed to -Ing. Its origin dates back to 1980 and the first-ever session that Goff and Schaer recorded on a Frippertronics-style audio loop system. The version presented here is the only existing recording of the piece in which both Goff and Schaer play electronic guitars.
The improvisation that follows "The Aquarium" showcases the sort of smoothness of interaction that years of working together can produce. Not only does this smoothness show up in the way that this piece moves through its many shifts in rhythms and pitches, but it is also shows up in the ways that every piece in this entire set segues seamlessly into the next.
The finale of this medley is a song that Goff and Schaer had often played together when they were members of the group: "Temporarily KY," back in 1979-1980. This is the only recording of -Ing incorporating "Suck On My Nose" into a Frippertronics audio loop. It was a purely spur-of-the-moment inspiration that led to this rendition, and, while after the rehearsal Goff and Schaer discussed developing a looped version of the song as a public performance piece, they never acted on the idea.
"Beyond The Aquarium" is Volume Five of the "Unveiled -INGredients" series of audio recordings. Schaer and Goff recorded many hours of tape loop experiments as "-Ing" between 1980 and 1984. Most of the reel-to-reel tapes from those sessions have long since disappeared. Steve Schaer himself sadly left behind the world of the living in 1998 as well. However, in 2019, Steve's widow, Dee Ann, discovered some cassette copies of a few of the original -Ing reels, which Schaer had recorded back in the 1980s. She passed these off to Robert Silverman (one of the original -Ing artists represented on -Ing's first public release), and he forwarded them to Goff in the spring of 2020. The "Unveiled -INGredients" series was created from these cassette recordings.
